Subject: MEMPHIS 2nd jam is creepy goodness
The Overture - Decent jungle jam to begin the night which comes to a nice peak before the end of Overture.
Wet - Standard.
Mulberry's Dream - Standard
MEMPHIS > Don > Story - 1st MEMPHIS jam is great, with some sick interplay between Magner and Barber creating a really ethereal theme. Sammy holds off on his snare for the PERFECT amount of time, and it turns into an awesome jam. 2nd jam in MEMPHIS is just straight up creepy goodness. Magner is playing some absolutely haunting melodies, and I love them all. After several minutes they drop the creepiness and start sounding more like a jamband with a synthesizer and suddenly you know that Don is coming. Honestly, the Don jam does very little to nothing for me. Story jam has a few decent parts here and there, but overall it's rather bland.
About the only things in the first set worth re-listening to are the jams associated with MEMPHIS.
Svenghali > Dribble > Humu > House Dog - Neat drum n' bass jam out of Svenghali to start the set. Magner is doing some great texturing and Barber is playing the perfect riff for this jam. Really enjoy this jam, and the switch to Dribble comes out of nowhere in a really cool way. The 1st jam in Dribble is a dubby jam with some great stuff from Sammy and Magner. Another fantastic jam. They manage to make this jam very interesting and keep shifting its sound without sounding unfocused or all over the place. Gets a little psychotic at places, which I'm completely fine with in a Dribble jam. Great jam out of Dribble. Barber and Brownstein are caught in a great groove over the house beat, and Magner is messing around with a vibraphone patch. Love it. The jam out of Humu is also good. I'm not quite sure how to classify it. There's some happy stuff, some dancy stuff, but overall it's just a really good jam that sounds like it came out of Humu. The HDPF 1st jam is decent as far as HDPF 1st jams go. Barber's got some neat lines here and there. The 2nd House Dog jam is very patient at the beginning. Once they get into the 3-on-the-floor beat, Magner is playing some really cool stuff. Certainly not my favorite part of this segment, but still some interesting stuff, and the peak is well done.
IRW - Standard
MEMPHIS, Svenghali > Dribble > Humu > HDPF are the jams to listen for. The MEMPHIS 2nd jam is probably my favorite portion of the night. 4 stars.
